"Before I Die is a global participatory public art project that reimagines our relationship with death and with one another in the public realm. Originally created by artist Candy Chang in New Orleans after the death of a loved one, the artwork invites people to reflect and share their personal aspirations in public." "Over 5,000 walls have been created in seventy-eight countries and thirty-five languages. Each wall is a tribute to living an examined life."

I think that the successful strategies Chang has applied to her work in order to initiate interaction are the scale as well as giving the audience phrases to work from. If I was given a large wall with a starting point already written on it, I would be far more likely to write on it than a small, blank space. The audience are also given a range of colours to write with which makes the process more fun.

I think that the interactions were successful because the question "What do you want to do before I die?" is very thought provoking for most people. I also think that the chalk on a blackboard can feel less final so the audience will be less intimidated by writing their desires in front of everyone as it's not permanent.

I think that the interactive element makes this work more memorable because it wouldn't exist without people going up to write their ambitions on the wall.
